The cheapest solution will be to use Disk Utility’s First Aid to find disk errors. Or you could run TechTool, which we reviewed the other day, to find disk problems. It is possible that the situation is caused by a Trojan virus and complicated by network utility software. So you might want to run McAfee’s VirusScan, Norton AntiVirus or other anti-virus software.

Screenshot 01

Screenshot 02

Screenshot 03

Our situation was this. We started having this total system shutdown after I installed and played cross-platform multiplayer game called Urban Terror. After reinstalling the game, the problem stopped occurring. But it started again this time without involving Urban Terror.

The system error resurfaced only when we used Mac-only web browser called Camino. Initially, we thought it was an isolated problem only caused by Camino. We trashed cache and cookies. In fact, it is possible that we have a computer virus in browser’s cache. We often click on unsafe links and go to possibly malicious websites as it is partly our job to find such websites and make news out of them. Screenshot 03 shows that our computer contracted a computer virus called Downloader after accessing www.wp-stats-php last week. But running Norton AntiVirus didn’t eradicate the problem. We also used the latest version of TechTool Pro to find disk problems. But the problem persisted. Our decision point for OS reinstallation came when the system crash while using another web browser called OmniWeb.

The last major OS problem occurred early November, 2006. Every icon we clicked was square-bordered. (See Screenshot 04.) We thought TechTool Pro 4 could fix the problem. But it partially damaged the internal hard drive.

Screenshot 04
Image simulation

Screenshot 05

Screenshot 06

Anyway, the only option we have left is OS reinstallation. And we were well-prepared for a rainy day. Two important things to do when you first use a new Mac are

to make a separate partition for OS.

to organize accounts and passwords.

If fact, we reinstall OS on this Mac (iMac G5 2 GHz, OS X 10.4.11) every 6 months or so because we review and use a lot of software titles, which often screws up the system. As shown in Screenshot 05, the internal hard disk drive is partitioned into two volumes, one of which is exclusively used for OS. And we use an external hard disk drive (hard disk case) powered by FireWire to store all files. In this way, if we want to reinstall OS, we won’t have many files to back up.

How about storing passwords? There are many shareware titles for this purpose. And we use a shareware title called PasswordMaster, which seems to be discontinued. PasswordMaster is very easy to use. As shown in Screenshot 06, you can store username, password, a website URL and notes for each account. If you are going to reinstall OS, then export data by choosing Backup Data under Tools. (See Screenshot 07.) After reinstalling OS, you can choose Restore Data to import data back.

Screenshot 07

Screenshot 08

Screenshot 09

Before reinstalling OS, there are many system files to back up. We have already explained which file for which software title to be backed up in an article titled ‘File Backup Guide Under Mac OS X 10.4.’ So we won’t go into a lot of details this time. Anyway, software titles for which we want to back up data include Mail, Microsoft Entourage, Stickies, Virtual PC, iPhoto, iNotePad and QuickTime. You can find folders to back up inside Library for Mail, passwords (KeyChains) and Stickiers. (See Screenshot 08.) As for web browsers, some of them create a folder inside Library > Application Support. (See Screenshot 09.) If you suspect you have contracted a computer virus through a web browser, you don’t want to back up these folders to restore bookmarks and website accounts. Instead, use the bookmark export function if it’s available. Most web browsers including Firefox and Camino have this function. (See Screenshot 10 & 11.) By the way, in our case, we are not going to save KeyChains because we have so many website accounts and want to refresh the list.

Screenshot 10

Screenshot 11

Screenshot 12

If you are finished backing up system files, then let’s move on to erasing OS. Again, if you suspect that you have a computer virus, don’t just format the volumes. At least, you need to initialize them. If you are going to use Disk Utility, click on the Erase tab and then press the button that says Security Options. You need to choose Zero Out Data, at least. (See Screenshot 12.)

For hark disk initialization, we used TechTool Pro’s Wipe Data with eDisk to erase data on both volumes of the internal HD. (Read our software review on TechTool Pro for more information on eDisk.) If you are going to use eDisk to initialize an internal hard disk drive, then launch the system with it. You will have access to Disk Utility. Use it to break partitions and then format the drive. Finally, start Wipe Data. Expect that this process will take 3 hours for a 250-GB hard drive for the same system we have.

Screenshot 13

Screenshot 14

Screenshot 15

After all, do we still have the same system shutdown problem?
