One solution may be use of QuickTime components called Flip4Mac. Since Final Cut Pro uses QuickTime to read video files, Final Cut Pro users do benefit from having Flip4Mac’s QuickTime components. But how about iMovie users? iMovie doesn’t use QuickTime to read video files. So use of Flip4Mac doesn’t solve the problem.

As a matter of fact, if you have access to Windows Operating System, you may not even need Flip4Mac. That’s good news for iMovie users. In fact, if you have Microsoft’s Virtual PC, it is possible that you can re-encode your WMV video files and use them on Final Cut Pro and iMovie.

This VTC shows how to re-encode Windows Media Player videos (WMV3), using Microsoft’s Virtual PC. The goal of this project is to re-compress WMV video with XviD and format it as AVI so that it can be imported to iMovie. We use a couple of freeware titles, which make it possible for us to read our WMV file under the Windows Operating System.

This VTC version is 1.0.

We run Windows 2000 with Virtual PC v. 7.0.2.

We use XviD 1.1.0 with VirtualDub 1.6.14 to re-compress the video file and format it as AVI.

A WMV video we use is a game trailer, which is compressed in H.264.

Video length: 6 minutes 21 seconds

Video format: QuickTime

Video compression: H.264

Video resolution: 720 x 540 pixels

Audio commentary: Not available

This VTC is only available to members.

It may take 30 to 40 minutes to re-compress this WMV file (25.9 MB, 852 x 480 pixels, 24.94 fps) in 1-pass encoding under Virtual PC.
