Some video compression applications come with filters to handle video artifacts. But before using these filters, we should know what video artifacts are in the first place, shouldn’t we? So what are they?
In this VTC, we identify four kinds of video artifacts: blocking, ringing (mosquito noise, ghosting, echoing), blurring and bleeding (smearing). The purpose of this VTC is not to show how to reduce these video artifacts but rather to explain what they are and where they come from. Explaining the origins of these compression by-products is not easy. So we go back to compression basics and briefly explain how video compression works. That is, some artifacts result from high compression. But we must understand what high compression means in the first place.
