There are quite a lot of Mac users who wish to import Windows Media Player files to Final Cut Pro and/or iMovie. One solution may be use of QuickTime components called Flip4Mac. Since Final Cut Pro uses QuickTime to read video files, Final Cut Pro users do benefit from having Flip4Mac’s QuickTime components. But how about iMovie users? iMovie doesn’t use QuickTime to read video files. So use of Flip4Mac doesn’t solve the problem.
As a matter of fact, if you have access to Windows Operating System, you may not even need Flip4Mac. That’s good news for iMovie users. In fact, if you have Microsoft’s Virtual PC, it is possible that you can re-encode your WMV video files and use them on Final Cut Pro and iMovie.

This VTC shows how to re-encode Windows Media Player videos (WMV3), using Microsoft’s Virtual PC. The goal of this project is to re-compress WMV video with XviD and format it as AVI so that it can be imported to iMovie. We use a couple of freeware titles, which make it possible for us to read our WMV file under the Windows Operating System.
