Although still in beta, this media player is a great piece of free software that is available not just to Mac users but also to those who use other operating systems including Windows, BeOS and different Linux versions. This open-source software is developed by Video LAN, and as of August 5, one copy is downloaded every 1.6 seconds.

While Apple’s QuickTime has trouble playing videos with certain codecs and formats, the Mac version of VLC supports many video and audio codecs and multimedia formats that include OGM and MKV. However, one of the multimedia formats that the Mac version of VLC (v. 0.85) doesn’t support is WMV (Windows Media 9).

This VTC introduces only basic functions (watching DVDs, viewing AVI-formatted video, taking snapshots…) of VLC v. 0.85.

It is a joy to use the VLC 0.85 by Video LAN
in its infancy.
I love it, and at present is my
favorite software.
