Mac Game Review: Prey

A few months ago, we posted a QuickTime game trailer for Aspyr Media’s new game Prey. It is developed by Human Head Studios. The PC counterpart was released on July 11, 2006. Considering that Mac versions are usually at least one year behind, this release from Aspry Media is not bad.

We have played the first several chapters of this game so far. And there are two things to strongly note about this game. The graphics are very good. We have reviewed hundreds of games in the past four years before and after opening this website, but Prey offers probably the best graphic quality. And its 3D rotation is amazing. There are many occasions in which you stand completely upside down. And you can get quite dizzy because of this 3D rotation.

Another thing to note about this game is its distinctive story line. The main character of the game is Tommy. He is a native American. While at a bar, he, his girlfriend Jen and his grandfather are abducted by aliens. Tommy has always denied his Cherokee heritage. While he desperately looks for Jen, his grandfather tells Tommy that the Cherokee heritage is the only way of his survival from captivity.

Prey is an adventure game and isn’t quite like Doom 3 or Quake 4. It’s more like Halo: Combat Evolved and Tron 2.0. There is something special about Prey that Doom 3 and Quake 4 doesn’t have. Nonetheless, so far, we have noticed that this game may lack some serious fight. We haven’t encountered a single boss figure yet in this game.
