I´m extracting clips from a dvd in a VIDEO_TS directory. The original file is about 80 minutes long but MPEG Streamclip only shows me 59 minutes of it. The only 2 vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder are vts_01_1.vob and vts_01_2.vob. Where are the remaining 21 minutes of the film? I just can´t access them!
Thanks.
I have no idea. I don’t even know what kind of system or what version of MPEG Stream you use. Please read ‘How to Use This Site’ before posting a comment or question in the first place.
There may be timecode breaks in the file which usually means the only a segment of the video will play. Open MPEG Streamclip – under Edit select Fix Timecode Breaks when you bring in the file. This may help.
Hi,
I am using MPEG streamclip to cut unwanted sections from movie files, and then trying to compress them into .avi
Such files (3-3.5 Gb) are typically recorded as transport stream of my internet+tv provider: I use Magneto-Free to record this, directly from VTC 0.8.5 (have to use this older version, it works fine with my provider).
Then, I am able to edit the .ts with MPEG Streamclip (+ the MPEG2 component). However, when I try to compress them into .avi, the software crashes and closes without notice. BTW, I successfully can export the same edited files in other formats… only .avi does give this crash problem.
My box is a MacBook Intel Duo 1.83 Ghz (first series) with OSX 10.4.8 , 1Gb RAM and 80G disk.
Thanks for any help,
F.
>BTW, I successfully can export the same edited files in other formats… only .avi does >give this crash problem.
If you can export it in MOV, then it would be just the matter of changing the container to AVI without compression, wouldn’t it?
Thanks for sharing your Knowledge.
Using OS 10.3.9, QT 7, latest version of Streamclip, Eye Tv 1.8.5 on a Powerbook G4.
Trying to convert mpeg 2 program streams created by Eye Tv to view on my ipod.
I have tried diferent export options and always loose the left channel.
Vid looks fine, no sync problems. QT info says the file are stereo, but no audio from the left.
Thank you kindley
TIP LIMON,
I don’t know what Eye TV is. But if you have no audio with QT, then the audio stream is probably AC3. If that’s the case, then choose ‘Convert to MPEG with MP2 Audio’ with MPEG Streamclip.
Thank you for your super timely response. Eye Tv is from El Gato. Hardware and software for tv on the mac. Eye Tv exports MPEG program streams with MP2 audio. Tried what you suggested, still missing only left side. Went threw all my vid. I believe I must have had a bad left channel on the cord I used to record the programs in the first place. Media recorded on a different box with different AV cable is truely in stereo. Media on the box I’m working with now QT says is stereo but no sound from left. Both tracks of audio are there, but no left side. Garbage in, garbage out.Guess I’m a dumb *$&^%. I appreciated you letting me bounce my problem off you.
Thanks again for the info and the site. Just came across it and I’m sorry to hear it might not be anymore. I haven’t become a member or tried any vid tutorials, but have read most of the blogs. Very helpful.
All the best,
TL
I am using MPEG Streamclip with OS 10.4.8 on a 15-inch PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz. I usually use 3iVX as a codec to rip. MPEG Streamclip has a cropping feature where you specify the number of pixels you want trimmed off, but how can you determine how many to trim off? Some programs have little frames and such, but I don’t see what you can do other than guess with MPEG Streamclip. But it’s a great program otherwise, and you have a great site!
I don’t quite understand the following statement.
>Some programs have little frames and such, but I don’t see what you can do other than guess with MPEG Streamclip.
The encoding process works in such a way that the entire screen is divided into 16 x 16 blocks called macroblocks. Each macroblock is further divided into 4 8 x 8 blocks for the encoder to determine whether the intraframe coding and motion search will be needed. So the frame may be trimmed such that the remaining area has a multiple of 16 or 8. That depends on the compressor.
What I mean to say is if I rip a DVD without cropping, the result is a QuickTime movie with black bars at the top and bottom. So I use the cropping feature to trim off 60 pixels or so from the top and bottom, thereby eliminating the black bars and preserving the actual picture. With MPEG Streamclip you fill in how many pixels you want to trim, but you can’t preview the result immediately, as far as I can tell. Am I missing something?
No freeware title is perfect. If you are not happy with the way MPEG Streamclip works in cropping black bars, perhaps, that’s an indication that you should use something else to cover the hole that MPEG Streamclip misses. For more information, please read Post #104. Open Shiiva or 3ivx’s cousin DiVA is more effective than MPEG Streamclip in cropping black bars. You can simply use Open Shiiva or whatever just to measure how many pixels to crop, switching to MPEG Streamclip to enter the values.
Yes, that’s what I’ve been doing. I was just wondering if I was missing something obvious. Thanks a lot.
I used Mac the Ripper to extract a foreign language DVD and want to then use MPEG Streamclip to export to QT. Is there a way to include the subtitles?
Read the instruction in posting comments carefully.
Do you want me to include all my system info? Sorry, I didn’t realize this would be needed for a question about extracting subtitles. I’m using MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1, Mac the Ripper 2.6.6 and Quicktime 7.1.3 on a Powerbook G4 running OSX 10.4.8 extracting a Video_TS from a DVD to Quicktime (compression Apple DV/DVCPRO – NTSC). I hope that’s enough info, I’d really like to know if it’s possible to include the subtitles.
Your best chance is to use D-Subtitler and to convert subtitle layers to srt files. In this way, you can watch your video with one of the subtitles using VLC. And you can use ffmpegX to compress video with subtitles, I think. For more information, you may want to read Post #30.
Thank you very much. I was hoping MPEG Streamclip could do it all, but your suggestions look very helpful – I’ll check them out.
Hi i’m using a mac and a JVC everio, i’m trying to convert the mpeg2 files on the camera into a useable format for either imovie or final cut express, when I use mpeg stream conversion to quick time the film converts fine but the sound is out of sink. Any ideas many thanks in advance!

Hi, I just bought a Panasonic VDR-D300 DVD camcorder. I downloaded the latest version of MPEG Streamclip to my Dual 2ghz G5 (1 gig ram, 200 gig hd). After recording about 5 minutes of video to the DVD-RAM disc supplied by Panasonic I connected the camera to my Mac with the supplied cable. I can see the camera’s DVD and the files on it. It mounts just like any other drive
When I try to open the .vro file from the DVD (in the camera) with MPEG Streamclip I get an error saying the file is too short. I click “open anyway” and the error repeats it self.
I tried to move the files from the DVD (in the camera) to my HD and that was not allowed either.
Any one have any advise on how to get the file out so I can edit on my Mac?
Thanks, Mitch
Don’t you have any software programs that come with the camera and allow you to move files to HD? And have you tried renaming .vro into .vob? Or your last resort may be ExportToQt from MPEG2Works.
Thanks for the quick reply. I am able to download the files as mpeg-2 from the software that came with the camera. If I want to use the mpeg-2 files I need apple’s mpeg-2 converter. The files on the DVD cannot be renamed.
I am looking to convert the .vro file on the DVD to mpeg-4 for use in Final Cut. According to the Squared5 web site, MPEG Streamclip supports .vro and mpeg-4 so I’m not sure what the issue is.
I tried to use Toast to make a disk image (to get the files off the DVD) but I get the same error as when I try to move the files to my HD
I suppose I can use ExportToQt but it requires the mpeg-2 converter as well. I’d like to figure a way for MPEG Streamclip to work for me as it’s designed for exactly what I want to do.
Whether you use QuickTime Pro, MPEG Streamclip or ExportToQT, you need MPEG-2 Playback component. So if you want to convert VRO or MPEG-2 into MPEG-4, you still need MPEG-2 Playback. For more information, read this Apple’s page under “What file types can be played back with the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component?”
I paid for, downloaded and installed the mpeg-2 component and still get the same error. Although I can now view mpeg-2 files with QuickTime, MPEG Streamclip still will not load my .vro file for conversion.
We have no more logical or valuable suggestions to your problem as we don’t own a Panasonic camcorder or have access to VRO files.
Thanks anyway. I have written to Squared5 to see if I can get an answer from them as to why the app will not open .vro files as supported. I’ll let you know what I find out.
The reason why MPEG Streamclip and Toast fail to read the disk is most likely because the media is not HD but thd DVD.
I finally got it all to work. I’m not exactly which component did the trick, probably not all of them but here’s what I did.
Installed the following
MPEG-2 component from Apple
Save as AVI.component
ReadDVD and GreatVideo from SAI (they are bundled together)
ReadDVD allows macs to mount the miniDVD so the .vro file can be moved to hd, which I did.
I tried using GreatVideo as the file extractor but it’s very limited in the files and controls you have to choose from. So, you really don’t need GreatVideo as you can buy ReadDVD seperatly.
I then extracted the video as a QT using MPEG Streamclip and got disk full errors after about 10 seconds. I tried this several times and got the same error. I restarted the mac and again the error with QT.
Then I tried extracting as AVI, success! My 580mb .vro was now 5gb avi video but it had no audio. I then installed the Save as AVI.component that comes with MPEG Streamclip and tried again. It all worked fine, audio and video. So, just for kicks I tried to export as QT again and this time it worked too.
I exported as QT with TGA compression (I’d like to have the option of “none” but it’s not there) highest quality, uncompressed audio, deinterlaced. The file is 19.5gb.
Now I need to learn to edit.
Good. Thanks for your info.
Hi guys im using a mac on OSX 10.4.8, 1GB Ram, Dual 800MHz G4 and i’m using streamclip 1.8, and whenever i try to export to AVI from m2v and aiff stream the program just crashes, doesn’t matter what codecs or settings i apply? Does anyone know why or how to stop this from happening? I know this question was asked earlier but the reply didn’t fix this prob for me. any other suggestions? also while i’m at it, i’ve read it’s possible to convert an MPEG2 file to an MPEG1 file but i can’t figure out how? help on this would really make my life easier so thanks in advance!
>i try to export to AVI from m2v and aiff stream
Choose ‘Export to QuickTime’ at first. If you can export it to QuickTime, then it will only be the matter of changing containers.
>it’s possible to convert an MPEG2 file to an MPEG1 file
There are several applications you can use. One is Roxio Toast. Another one is ffmpegX.
I was getting crashs too from QT until I installed the Save as AVI.component that came with Streamclip. That seemd to fix the crash problem. Don’t know y, it just did.
Hello, I was using VLC to receive MPEG2 multicast streams on I2, and saving them as MPEG2 program streams. Then using StreamClip to convert them to smaller H.264 QT movies. But on a long 8 hour movie I get the dialog “You can’t play or export streams longer than 6 hours 36 minutes.” Aside from cutting up the file, any way around this?
Thanking anyone for info…
Hello,
I am using MPEG streamclip for a Pal DVD to NTSC conversion, I have Apple Mpeg2 component, I use a Mac Book Pro Intel Core 2 Duo Mac OS X 10.4.9.
I a trying to upload the file VOB file I want and convert it to a DV PAL then I was thinking to use this method I found in apple discussion forum:
“Convert the PAL DVD/VOB to PAL DV via MPEG Streamclip.
Convert the PAL DV to NTSC DV via JES Deinterlacer. ”
When I do upload the VOB file, I open the stream info:
Stream: VTS_01_1.VOB
Path: /Volumes/Nuovo/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB
Type: VOB program stream
Duration: 0:23:55
Data Size: 1024.00 MB
Bit Rate: 5.98 Mbps
Video Tracks:
224 MPEG-2, 720 × 576, 4:3, 25 fps, 8.50 Mbps, upper field first
Audio Tracks:
128 AC3 3/2, 48 kHz, 448 kbps
Stream Files:
VTS_01_1.VOB (1024.00 MB)
Then I do try to make the conversion and the output file is so large, a lot of GB, 11 GB or so…what do I do wrong?
I do:
file>export as quicktime> 720×576 (dv-pal)+sound mpeg layer 2 256 kbps+ frame rate:25_upper scale first….
Am I missing any compression?
I have been searching an answer in few forums and I couldn’t find it, I hope someone can help…thanks a lot
Bia
bia, let me ask a simple question. What is DV? DV uses a constant bitrate of 25 megabits per second with an audio bitrate of 1.536 Mbit/s. MPEG-2 uses intraframe plus interframe compression while DV only uses intraframe compression. To wrap it up, a 11 GB file is what you are supposed to get.
Thanks….I understand….
I’m trying to convert a VOB file into a DV file, but after about 30 percent it always gives me a disk full error message.
so, now i will read as much as i can to learn how to have a final dvd ntsc disk with the same MB I started with in the DVD PAL…I am new to the process…thanx
Bia
Also, when i try to convert the VOB file into an avi, i get a compression error at about 30 seconds. I’m trying to import a ripped dvd into fcp in order to edit it, but when i drag in the VOB file i get no linked audio track. If there is either a way to place vobs directly into fcp without converting them first or a solution to my conversion problem, i would love to hear it. Thanks!
Some of you only care about their problems. They don’t follow rules. They don’t want to waste their time reading ‘How to Use This Blog,’ not even the top description of the page. That’s why some of the questions are intentionally unanswered. I understand that you are all too busy reading instructions. So if you are, don’t waste your time coming here in the first time.

It sounds like your MPEG-2 component is not functioning. Is it really for PPC?
>I’m trying to import a ripped dvd into fcp in order to edit it, but when i drag in the VOB file
You can’t read MPEG-2 on FCP. You have to
use Compressor orconvert VOB into DV. We can’t give you support for Compressor.>i get no linked audio track.
Unless you are using something else other than QuickTime to read files, FCP doesn’t read AC3.
Ok thanks! I’ll check out my mpeg2 component.

When I try to change my VOB into a DV file by exporting it as a DV I hit a size limit at 4 gigs. Is there a way to go over that 4 gig cap or break it up into separate sections per chance? Thanks again.
Nevermind I found out the problem… I feel stupid. Sorry for the hastle, I’m wading through my CP which is due tomorrow.
Hi, I have some basic questions about how the app. works. i.e. decoding/decompressing/compressing.
My souce is .vro file from my Panasonic camcorder (specs below) and I export to a higher res. codec (DV for instance) how does this effect the video? Is the .vro uncompressed to raw video then recompressed to DV or am I compressing the .vro file further? This does not seem right as my DV export is 8 times larger (k size) then the camera original, not further compressed.
If I’m using photoshop and I take a compressed image and export to another compression then the exported file is a smaller/compressed image of the original. This does not seem the case with video.
I’m editng my files in FCP and have dozens of different codecs and bitrate choices and am unsure if my up-rezing in MPEG Streamclip of the .vro to DV is actually necessary. Or what codec is the best to use for exporting/editing .vro files.
My final output, after editing, will be .flv files around 250kbps, 320×240.
Thanks, Mitch

>Is the .vro uncompressed to raw video then recompressed to DV or am I compressing the .vro file further?
Your VRO or MPEG-2 will be decoded at first. Video compression works in such a way that you have 8-by-8 color matrices with numbers and that many numeric entries will be reduced to zero. Decoding means that the numeric entries that have been reduced to zero will be put back to the original numbers. Video will be decoded, and then compressed with, say, DV.
>I’m editng my files in FCP and have dozens of different codecs and bitrate choices and am unsure if my up-rezing in MPEG Streamclip of the .vro to DV is actually necessary. Or what codec is the best to use for exporting/editing .vro files.
According to you, since your final destination is flv with a resolution of 320 x 240, you need not convert your files into DV. I would simply convert MPEG files into H.264. In this way, you don’t have to waste your disk space. You don’t even have to specify the bitrate in making H.264 files. Simply, set the keyframe to around 300 unless you have many scene changes.
Thank you so much for the explaination. I have been searching everywhere for one so concise.
I have tried doing a H.264 export but it takes forever. On my Dual 2Ghz G5 it took MPEG Streamclip 7:05 minutes to export a 1:42 min clip. If my .vro was a full disk I’m looking at 5 hours to expot. Using MPEG-4 it took only 1:25 to export the same clip. I have noticed all the Dv codecs take under 2 min as well. I do want to save file sizes but the time it takes is valuable as well. Do you have any second choices that are good editing codecs for my purposes? Maybe not as robust as H.264 but will still give me clean video for editing and relativly light file size (no more then 100megs per minute of video). My DV exports are about 200megs per minute and H.264 was about 100megs.
I see. Then import MPEG-2 directly to Final Cut Pro. An upcoming video tutorial will show how to use MPEG-2 with iMovie and FCP. It will only be available to members.
There is nothing else between DV and MPEG-4. Animation has a good quality, but the file size will be huge.
Thanks, I think I’ll stick with DV. Everytime I make edits in MPEG (2 or 4) footage I get dropframe errors during playback, especially at edit points. Maybe it’s because the formats are interframe? I don’t know. Unless I’m doing something wrong when exporting to MPEG, DV seems to work perfectly. (except for the larger file size). I tried Animation and yes the file was huge. Clean, but huge.

I have 28 mp4 QT files of varying size from 50 MB to 300 MB. I want to join them node-to-tail. This is easy using MPEG Streamclip. However, I wish to have Chapter marks at the beginning of each mp4 file that is joined. I would like to simply define up to 3 words for each Chapter in a plain text file with one per line and have these somehow used by Streamclip to insert them at the join points using the the first line in the text file for join 1, 2nd line used for join 2, etc.
Can this be done with Streamclip Version 1.8 (1.8) that I’m using ?
Thanks 🙂
If Square 5’s MPEG Streamclip allows you to lay chapter markers, then that’s one of the functions that I don’t know of. Therefore, I cannot help you.
It will perhaps be better if you mention why you need chapter markers.

Hi, if I’m reading this right it sounds like you would have more luck using iMovie to piece it all together and create chapters. However, you would have to manipulate the chapters and/or titles manually. I can’t say I’ve heard of a way to incorporate titles/chapters automatically from a text file. Although I’m not sure I totally understand what you’re trying to do either.
I am using MPEG Streamclip 1.8 on my mac mini (PowerPC G4) using OS 10.4.8. I burned some dvds from old hi 8 videos I had, and then grabbed the resulting vob files and converted them to MPEG-4 (720 x 480).
I think the program did a great job, but for some reason, both in preview and final form, there is a skinny strip at the bottom of the screen that appears to be the bottom part of the image offset to the right by a noticeable margin. If a take the original dvd and play it on a couple of my dvd players and tvs, this strip doesn’t seem to be there, so I think it is something that Streamclip is doing. Not sure if I can correct it or just clip off the bottom somehow. Do you have any thoughts on this?
BTW – the dvds I have that I burned directly from tv indicate a resolution of 5– x 720, and when converted, they do not produce the strip at the bottom. Don’t know if this is helpful or not. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Great site btw!
That’s supposed to indicat 5?? x 720. I am not at how where I can look at it.
If you’re just looking for a way to crop out the offset portion of the video you can just check the cropping check box in the MPEG 4 exporter window. You will probably have to experiment using different numbers in the bottom number field. I would trim out a small piece of the video and try different amounts until you get it right before exporting the entire file.
Thanks so much – I’ll try that. If anyone else has had this issue, I’m still interested in know how you got around it.

Actually, I went home at lunch and cropped a small section of video and it seemed fine for my purposes. Now I am left testing which conversions give me the truest results. I am not very knowledgeable about video, but if I come to any valuable conclusions, I’ll post them here. Thanks so much for your help!
Hi, I’m using MPEG Streamclip to convert a DVD VOB file to DV. Is it possible to make this with a subtitle stream “burned in the video”?
By the way I’m using a PowerBook G4 and have FCP Studio on it.
Thanks for any help.
Just to add an information: I tried to use D-Subtitler (nice application) to get the .srt file. But since the subtitle stream I’m trying to extract contains lot of non-Roman carachters the OCR feature got “confused” with them… That’s why I’d prefer to do this process with MPEG Streamclip if possible.

(3) Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 reference QT 1920x1080i original Squeezed by Sorenson into MPEG 60Mbps elementary stream (video), MPEG Layer 2 (audio).
Using MPEG Streamclip 1.8
I need output a 80Mbps Transport stream (max bitrate) to playback on a Doremi Nugget player/server.
I thought I could make the audio and video compression in Sorenson and then bring it into MPEG Streamclip and have it create a transport stream from the two identically named files (albeit different extensions). I can open the video file. I can open the audio file. But Streamclip won’t let me open both. So when I go to convert to transport stream, all I get is the video.
Can Streamclip provide a transport stream from these files?
Do I need to be doing something different like creating program files from Sorenson instead of elementary files?
The website administrator is currently busy busting cybercriminals and will not read or answer any of your questions for now.
>Hi, I’m using MPEG Streamclip to convert a DVD VOB file to DV. Is it possible to make this with a subtitle stream “burned in the video
ffmpegX will probably do the job.
>Can Streamclip provide a transport stream from these files?
HighDef, I don’t know. I would use ffmpegX or VLC from VideoLAN instead.
HighDef
I too have attempted to merge mpeg files using MpegStreamclip to no avail. No amount of copying and pasting is going to do the trick. Since I’m not familiar with your server I’m not really sure what to tell you about how to compress your files. It might be worth a try to export a program file from Sorenson and see if that will work with your server.
help? I am not that familiar with video editing so I’m a little in over my head.

Please help – thank you
What are your QuickTime and MPEG-2 Playback versions?
By the way, that’s a cute name.

Try using these settings in the Mpegstreamclip movie exporter window.
Compression: DVCPRO – PAL
Quality: 100%
Frame size: “other” 320 x 240
Check the Deinterlace Video box
I’ve had some problems with this type of thing when working with mpeg streams captured from television. I’m not totally sure but the DVCPRO codec, and deinterlacing could help with your sync problems.
I am new to MPEG streamclip and would like a simple overview of how to use it. I was excited to find this site with the tutorial, but I can’t view it. Any suggestions?

I am using a Dual 1GHz G4 QuickSilver mac and OSX 10.4.9 with iLife06, latest rev.
Trying to create a 16:9 NTSC DVD.
Current workflow:
Create slideshow in iPhoto with Ken Burns effect. 16:9 format, and share to iDVD.
Quit iDVD, then convert .mov to .dv using MPEG Streamclip 1.8.
Import into iMovie, set chapter markers and normalize soundtrack volume.
Share to iDVD, create menus and burn DVD.
I added the MPEG Streamclip step because iMovie destroyed the video quality when it did the conversion on import. MPEG Streamclip dialog box says use “Split DV stream into segments” should be checked when exporting for iMovie. If I check this box, I get an error when importing into iMovie. On the other hand, iMovie takes a lot of time to do something while it is importing the .dv clip created without the checkbox. Did I miss something in setting up MPEG Streamclip?
Thanks.
>Did I miss something in setting up MPEG Streamclip?
Why do you have to convert an mov slideshow or whatever to DV? That’s probably an unnecessary step and a possible cause of problems. By the way, I don’t know what Ken Burns Effect is. Is it a proprietary collection of effects for iMovie and others?
I changed the workflow of going from iPhoto to iMovie because the import into iMovie causes motion artifacts. I have tried multiple variations to solve this. iPhoto is very restrictive in output of 16:9 format. The only way I have found to do this is using the Share to iDVD path, export gives no ability to specify aspect ratio, and is set to 4:3.
Ken Burns effect is a zooming and panning effect which takes a still picture and creates a short quicktime movie. iPhoto, Photo to Movie, and several other programs support this effect.
So far, the best workflow involves the MPEG Streamclip conversion. I’m puzzled by the checkbox anomalie.
What are slideshow’s video compression and file size?
There are several kinds of artifacts, which is it?And video may suffer from artifacts without motion blur.Never mind about video compression. It’s MPEG-4 Part 2. If the file size is not very big, could you post that QuickTime slideshow at your website?
Have a hectic schedule this week. Will try later in the week. Thanks.
Never mind. You can create a 16:9-ratio slideshow with iPhoto anyway. Here is an example.
I just bought a Canon DC-50 camcorder. I need to learn how to edit those miniDVD’s. I suspect “StreamClip” would be the ticket, but I haven’t a clue as to how to go about it.
Please, could you help this ‘Newbee” out.
Thanks
Nice show. I was able to do that 4 weeks ago. The problem was importing the .mov into iMovie. The artifacts showed up after it was converted to .dv format. Continued into iDVD and the burned DVD. That’s what I was trying to fix.

I guess I’m learning the rules of the forum. Sorry about not including the hardware in my first post.
I do want to learn editing of those MiniDVD’s from the Canon camcorder, and I have had a devil of a time trying to figure out how to run StreamClip. The video on the site looked great for learning the basics, but, as you know, I couldn’t open it. I just need some pointers as to how to go about it. I did buy “Toast-7”, but have been reluctant to install it thinking that all I need is StreamClip. I had Toast-6 or 5 in my other computer that my wife uses, and had good luck just making generic DVD’s from individual photos.
Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
Also 1 more question. And I probably didn’t come across the answer reading the rules of the website. Do all posts to this forum need to include the hardware information every time? I don’t mind, but I want to know so I can keep the info handy by the computer.
Thanks:

To parlyle345,
>Do all posts to this forum need to include the hardware information every time?
No. But if you come back one year from now, nobody will know who you are. In that case, you will advised to state your system information.

The freeloader slot is closed because freeloaders don’t bother to post comments or cast votes in surveys. You can watch it at YouTube.
>I need to learn how to edit those miniDVD’s.
If you want to edit movies recorded in your camcorder, what you will need is not MPEG Streamclip but iMovie, Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express. There are other apps including Adobe Premiere. MPEG Streamclip is just a helper application that lets you change formats of movies and transcode them with different compressors.

About the MPEG Streamclip– I was led to believe that the camcorder’s miniDVD’s are NOT in a format that is recognized by iMovie. Therefore I would have to plug the camcorder’s usb cord into my laptop. ( When iPhoto opens up, close it and open Streamclip.)
Then I was to download the disk into Streamclip and change the video to DV and put it on the desktop
Then I was to open iMovie and import the DV file from the desktop.
Does this seem correct?
I have not done it, because the disks are from our son’s college graduation, and I don’t want to do anything that might cause them to disappear. If you know what I mean.
I would have to find another family to live with because this one would let me go.
I will try to find the video of the Streamclip operatiion on YouTube.
Thank you very much for your help
Lyle
Lyle, I’m a little bit busy right now but will get back to you in an hour or so.
>Then I was to download the disk into Streamclip and change the video to DV and put it on the desktop
>Does this seem correct?
Perphas… But I can’t say yes or no because, first, I don’t even know what are the original file format and video compressor. First of all, your camcorder must come with several apps. One of them may let you change video formats. And conversion of video format and compressor may also depend on what the final product (DVD, QuickTime slideshow, YouTube upload…) will be.
Hello,
I’m using an ibook G4. I have downloaded the new version of MPEG Streamclip and QuickTime-MPEG2 so I can view the video files from my new Panasonic HDC-SD1-S (file format MTS).
I can’t manage to view anything, when I try to open it, it simply says (Error unrecognized file type).
Can someone help me with this?

Yes it does.
It comes with “Digital Video Solutions disk” which is for Windows,( I have a Mac ) and has to do with downloading still images from the card, into your computer.
On that CD there is something called “ImageBrowser 5.7 ” which is for Mac, and does the same thing as iPhoto. So I don’t need that.
>And conversion of video format and compressor may also depend on what the final product
My final product will eventually be standard size DVD-R, edited from iMovie, and burned from iDVD (This is so I can distrubute them to all of the people in my family I mentioned before)
Thanks for the responses, and I did go to YouTube and watched the video on StreamClip.
I know I will be watching that one for a few more times, too. Really hard to see the video, because of the grainyness and such , but it’s better than nothing.
Thanks:

(1) You need not use MPEG Streamclip.
(2) Since your final destination is iDVD, DV may be the best choice. Set the format to DV and import movies to your Mac with iMovie.

Thanks for the response on this one too. I will look into your answer, but I don’t know if I have a choice to select DV as the format at the beginning of the download to the computer. Thats where StreamClip would come into use. If I am mistaken on this, I apologize.
I think that I will eventually have to try to get this done, as there are people who are waiting for the DVD’s. One question I do have before I begin, do the miniDVD’s have to be finalized to be downloaded into a computer? I read someplace that to be able to edit the contents of the miniDVD it must NOT be finalized. I just thought I would ask this before I delve into the project. Again, I appreciate the forum and hope to be a continuing user of this site. It sure has been interesting and a learning experience. I will becoming a member shortly, I hope.

>I don’t know if I have a choice to select DV as the format at the beginning of the download to the computer.
According to this article, your camcorder is not compatible with Macs.
>One question I do have before I begin, do the miniDVD’s have to be finalized to be downloaded into a computer? No.
Hi all,
does anyone know if there will be a new version of MPEG StreamClip soon? The MAC version has a Engima menu for Dreambox owners, but due to current Dreambox firmware changes that functionality has been completly destroyed. I can’t open any recording directly on the Dreambox anymore. MPEG StreamClip responds with “Please reboot your DreamBox, check the cable and the IP address.”, and that’s it.
Dreambox firmware CVS versions after december 2006 all don’t work with MPEG StreamClip (1.5-1.8). I tried to collect Syslog messages from both the Mac and the Dreambox itself to at least find out what really is the problem, but no results. Emailed Squared5 a few times in the last 4 months, but no repsonse so far…
I’m finding it increasingly strange that this is the only forum that generates any kind of conversation? Nobody has questions about After Effects or Final Cut Pro? Just an observation.. not really a question.
Yes. That’s been true for the past year. People only come here to watch videos instead of exchanging information.

I want to convert a 17 minute VOB file to DV-NTSC
I drag the VOB file in to the converter
The In point says 0:00:00,00
The Out Point says 0:17:34,28
The Stream Info window says it’s all there
But only a few seconds show up in the viewer when I play it.
Where’s my material?
How can I set new In and Out Points if I can’t see the material?
I tried dumping the preference file and rebooting but I still have the same problem
(In tests yesterday, everything was fine.)
Stream Info:
Duration: 0:17:34
Data Size: 1023.97 MB
Bit Rate: 8.14 Mbps
Video Tracks:
224 MPEG-2, 720 × 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps, 8.00 Mbps, lower field first
Audio Tracks:

Stream Files:
VTS_01_1.VOB (1023.97 MB)
You don’t have MPEG-2 Playback component, do you?
Yes, I do – have MPEG-2 Playback component.
And trimming worked in tests earlier.
I did upload the material eventually by not looking at it in the viewer first. In this case, it didn’t really matter if I trimmed or not. There wasn’t that much raw material, so I could do the trimming in Final Cut Pro.
But there are cases where I’d need to trim, where space would be an issue.
Could there be something wrong with my preference settings?
Tell me the lengths before and after the trim.
Honestly, I have never used the trimming function on MSC. So I can’t give you much help. And I’m only curious, but how do you intend to convert the final VOB file into DVD?
There are no lengths before and after trim because I can’t play the material in the viewer and that’s my problem.
Workflow: VOB to DV-NTSC to FCP to DVDSP to DVD
Couldn’t get more than a couple of seconds to show up and play in the viewer but I did manage to upload the material and convert it – just couldn’t watch it or trim it in MSC.
GGGGG… Sorry. Now, I got the whole picture. I had to ask the last questions because I didn’t fully understand you. You don’t even get to the point where you can set in and out points because you can only see the first few seconds of the movie.
I can only say that there has been no single occasion where I was not able to preview the video.
Another source of confusion is that the duration of your video is only 17’34. But its file size is 1023.97 MB. That’s very odd. Is that VOB file one of several inside Video_TS?
I just tested the trimming function with a small MOV file under MSC 1.8 with no problem.
Are you able to preview the entire length with the following applications?
QuickTime Pro
ffmpegX
Toast Titanium 7 or 8
Compressor 2 or 3
Ahh… Wait a second. Did you combine all the VOB files into one? Or you only have one VOB?
It’s a single VOB file – not combined (one of three on the DVD).
All the files on the DVDs I’m working with are the same size.
They play in QuickTime, they play in Preview in the Finder.
They upload fine (I was able to import them and edit them in FCP).
Just couldn’t play them in MPEG Streamclip.
Could it be the format of the DVDs? (They were all made by the same person at the same time.)
Or the file size?
What’s unusual about the file size? Is it larger or smaller than usual?
No, sorry, never mind the file size.
>It’s a single VOB file – not combined (one of three on the DVD).
That’s what I thought. The source of your problem could be that you are reading only one of them. Try reading them altogether. If you open the first one of the series, MSC will ask you if you want to read all of them. Then choose yes. If you don’t get that dialogue, combine all of them into one ans see what happens.

Hi, I’m new to video editing so please bear with me. All I am trying to do is edit xvid coded AVI files in MPEG Streamclip. By edit I mean trim a 30min video into smaller 3 to 5min clips. I was able to do it from one avi file but then I had playback issues with the other files. Here is the stream info for the file that worked fine.
Duration: 1:24:59
Data Size: 550.19 MB
Bit Rate: 0.91 Mbps
Video Tracks:
XviD 1.1, 480 × 272, 29.97 fps, 797 kbps
Audio Tracks:
MPEG Layer-3 Audio stereo, 44.1 kHz, 108 kbps
And below are all the files that are giving me problems. First, as you can see the durations are truncated. These files are 1hour 45min long when I open them in QT or VLC player. Second, 2 of the files have no sound. Third, one of the clips have no sound nor video.
No sound
Duration: 0:00:38
Data Size: 10.15 MB
Bit Rate: 2.20 Mbps
Video Tracks:

Audio Tracks:

Video Tracks:

Audio Tracks:
MPEG Layer-3 Audio stereo, 48 kHz, 384 kbps
Needless to say all 3 files plays fine in QT and VLC players. I also tested other AVI files in MPEG Streamclip and the other AVI files I am not trying to edit plays fine.
Please help?
I see. (1) If you want to re-compress your Xvid-compressed videos, you must have an Xvid QT component. Do you have one? (2) You may try changing multimedia containers from AvI to MOV at first and then compressing videos with xvid, DivX, MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.264.
(1) No I don’t want to re-compress the vidoes, I just want to clip them to the specific parts I want. But I do have the xvid codec for QT.
(2) I’ll give this a try.
Thanks.
>No I don’t want to re-compress the vidoes
In that case, you can simply use QuickTime Pro to trim some frames and save (as opposed to re-compressing) the files. They will be MOV files, though, I think. MPEG Streamclip might allow you to save the files after trimming frames. But I’m not sure and have no access to MSC at this moment since we are compressing videos.
Hi .
I’ve been using MPEG Streamclip (M.S) for a while now , but just came across an odd problem .
I was trying to convert an .AVI movie file made with Divx 6.0 , but the M.S. only “sees” the first 15 or so minutes of it. In the “stream info” window the M.S. shows approx. 150 mb of 765 mb that the file consists of. The part that it sees , plays and converts just fine. That same file plays perfectly in QuickTime and VLC player. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Mac OSX 10.4
Intel 5.1 2.0 Ghz
1 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
M.S. 1.9.b3
Hmm… I don’t know. I’m just curious, but… (1) Is your AVI a DVD-ripped movie? (2) What do you precisely mean by “trying to convert a .AVI movie file”? Do you mean switching formats with save as? (3) What does ‘Stream Info’ say about the video compressor under ‘Video Tracks,’ DivX 5.0?
Thanks for the prompt reply.
1) No, it’s not a DVD movie. Just some personal video.
2) Yes , I’m trying to “save as AVI” because my TV/DVD combo somehow recognizes AVI encoded videos only if they’ve been “converted” from AVI to AVI by M.S.
3)Here’s the stream info:
Stream: Bros.avi
Path: ~/Desktop/Bros.avi
Duration: 0:10:19 (should be 1hr 15 mins)
Data Size: 108.36 MB (should be 768 MB)
Bit Rate: 1.47 Mbps
Video Tracks:
DivX 5.0, 544 × 304, 25.001 fps, 1.31 Mbps
Audio Tracks:
MPEG Layer-3 Audio stereo, 44.1 kHz, 160 kbps
Stream Files:
Bros.avi (108.36 MB) (again ,should be 768)
Now , I’ve just noticed that M.S. says Divx 5.0 , but VLC says Divx 6.0 . How could that be? Could that be the cause of the problem?
>How could that be? Could that be the cause of the problem?
I’m not so sure. No. 1, I needed to know the contact. If it’s a personal movie, it is possible that you have time code breaks. No. 2, some software titles does not recognize DivX 6 and Xvid as compressors correctly. Divx 6 is not widely used anyway. So if the problem is not the result of time code breaks, you may want to compress your video with something else like MPEG-4 Part II and H.264.
I’m not sure what “time code break” is. How does one check for it? Is it fixable?
What should I use to compress with MPEg-4 and H.264?
We don’t own a video camera. But, to my knowledge, a timecode break occurs when you stop recording video, forward/rewind the tape and then start recording again. Look at the bottom option of MSC under Edit. As for the last question, an answer can be very complicated unless you are very specific. And it should be covered over some of the video tutorials.
Again , thanks for trying to help me. I ended up transcoding the video thru VLC into .asf and then turning that into another AVI file. Somehow it worked. Thanks.
One last question. It was my understanding , that M.S. can open and convert .FLV files, however when tried, all I get is an “unsupported file type” window and clicking “open anyway” doesn’t help. Re-downloading M.S. a few times , as well as repairing permissions doesn’t solve it. Any suggestions?
Thank you.
>M.S. can open and convert .FLV files
No. Only several selected apps including VLC and Flash.app can read FLV files.
Admin.
With all due respect , I think you might be wrong. During initial installation a pop-up window clearly states that M.S. “can now open FLV files”. Unless it’s just a joke why would they say it if it wasn’t true?
Okay. Then that’s something that I didn’t know. Thanks for your info.
I guess I’m outta luck then . Oh well.
Great app though.
I do not know what the latest available version is. But my version of MPEG Streamclip, 1.8, doesn’t read FLV files.
Well , if you were to download the 1.9x , the first pop-up you’d see after installing the M.S. would mention FLV support. Also , after some digging on Google , many folks did mention how great M.S. is at playing and converting Flash . I’d like to be one of those people))
Make that the second pop-up.

I am using MSC to convert files from my JVC Everio video camera from their original .mod format into files that can be used by imovie. I am able to get succesful conversions when I save them as avi, dv using MSC that can be used in imovie but result in alot of horizontal artifact making the motion somewhat hard to follow. I have had the best success with the H.264 compression but rather enourmous files result(128mb becomes 648mb). All of the Apple DV pro options result in unacceptable performance(artifact). Is there any advice you could reccommend to achieve high quality results without quadrupling file size. I’m pretty new to this so am unsure of what would be the optimum settings and compression.

I’m using version 1.9b3 to convert Xvid to divx avis. Until recently the program worked flawlessly , but now sound seems to run away from videos after conversions. It progressively gets from 1-2 secs to as much as 10-15 secs ahead of images. Also , the Streamclip often “hangs” during the conversion(beach ball spinning) and then continues to proceed . Any thoughts?
Thanks.
One more thing. After the conversion info is shown in VLC player ,the original sound reads as “Mpga audio 48000Htz 126 bitrate” but the conversion only reads “Mpga audio”.
I would switch the package of Xvid movie to Mov at first and re-compress it with Divx if I were you.
What is the audio compressor? The Mac version of Divx only supports MP3. If VLC Media Player says that the audio compressor is Mpga, then there’s something wrong with the way you compressed your audio stream.
I reinstalled MPEGstreamclip and so far so good.
Thanks for the response though. If anything , maybe the app just crapped out on me.
