Dealing with MPEG-2 video is a little bit complicated for Mac users. QuickTime Pro allows users to transcode MPEG video into DV and MPEG-4 only with help of Playback component. But when AC3 is involved, the situation can get more complicated.
There are not many Mac applications that let you convert MP2 (MPEG-1 Layer II) into AC3 in the first place. And many users may choose to keep the video compression as it is instead of re-compressing it into DV.
The purpose of this video tutorial is to show how you can swap only audio tracks, changing formats from MP2 to AC3 or vice versa, while maintaining the quality of the video stream. We use several applications in this video tutorial on top of QuickTime (no Pro upgrade needed) and VLC, which are only used to playback video. We also use Microsoft’s Virtual PC so that we can use a freeware title that is only available for Windows OS to convert MP2 into AC3. Note that if you have a Mac application that allows you to convert MP2 into AC3, there is absolutely no need for you to get on Virtual PC or Boot Camp.
This video tutorial also shows how to convert MPEG-2 video with AC3 into MPEG-2 with MP2. But that should be a quite simple task for anyone.
