Mac Software Review: Screenium 1.0

Mac shareware Synium Software Screenium
Mac software review

There are about 7 to 8 screen-capture shareware titles for Macs that we are aware of. Ambrosia Software‘s Snapz Pro X is by bar more popular than any other screen-capture shareware title. But Snapz Pro X is not perfect. Ambrosia Software has not been able to fix Snapz Pro X’s incompatibility issue with Final Cut Pro for years.

How about Screenium? This Mac software title is developed by Synium Software, a developer of CleanApp, which we reviewed about 2 months ago. The latest software version of Screenium is still 1.0. And the price is only US20, more than one-third cheaper than Snapz Pro X. Usually, its price tells you what it does, right? Does that mean we cannot expect good performance on Screenium?

When you launch Screenium for the first time, you will probably see the settings under the Audio/Video tab. (See Screenshot 01.) This is where you make importance choices including ones for audio and video compressors.

Let’s first go to Audio at the bottom. There are three input devices listed. If you want to include system audio (audio run by the system like the beep sound and iTunes music), you need to enable System Audio (Screenium). If you click on the check box, you will be prompted to enter a system administrative password. (See Screenshot 02.) Furthermore, there’s a button with up & down arrows next to Audio CD. If I click on it… I get to customize audio compression settings. (See Screenshot 03-4.) Looking at Screenshot 04, it looks like Screenium doesn’t let the user choose not to compress audio (to have uncompressed audio). Does that mean Final Cut Pro users have to re-compress the audio track? We will get to that later on.  Continue reading

Using Extra SD/SDHC with USB Flash Card Reader/Writer

USB SDHC Card Reader

About 12 days ago, we reviewed a 16-GB USB flash memory drive from A-DATA. A major problem that we’ve found with it is that its Write speed is extremely slow on Macs while it’s fine under Windows XP with the same machine. As we reported, it took almost 4 minutes when we transferred a package containing several files with a total of 72.2 MB from a FireWire-connected external hard disk drive to the USB memory. This Write speed is totally unacceptable.

Does that mean all USB Flash memory sticks are slow on Macs? And what are other affordable hardware alternatives to swap files between Macs and Windows through Boot Camp?

A week ago, I went to a local electronics store to buy a video cable. And I wanted to check out USB Flash memory sticks from other manufacturers. That’s when I saw a package that said SDHC·SD·MCO Card Reader/Writer. (See Screenshot 01.)

Huh? What is this product? The description of the product shown at the back of the package says that I can insert an SD/SDHC card and then that I can use the card as a USB flash drive. Umm… I have an extra 512-MB flash disk. And the price for this little product was only ¥980 (US$9.50). So I decided to try it out.  Continue reading

Mac Software Review: AKVIS Coloriage 5 (Mac & Windows)

Mac software review

More than 20 years ago, I enjoyed watching one TV show ever week. I think it was Alfred Hitchcock Presents. The original work was done in Black & White. They said they used computers to reproduce all episodes in color and aired the whole series a few decades later. A few years ago, I wondered if there were any software applications that would allow me to reproduce a color image out of an image in Black & White like that. And I found none. Then I ran into AKVIS Software’s website by accident about 14 hours ago and found Coloriage. Now, the search is over. This software title lets you reproduce a color image out of a Black & White photo. So let’s see how Coloriage works quickly.

AKVIS Coloriage comes with a standalone application and a Photoshop plug-in. You can use whichever you want. And the final result won’t change. If you are going to use the Photoshop plug-in, choose AKVIS > Coloriage under Filter after opening a Black & White photo image. (See Screenshot 01-2.) If you are going to use the standalone application version, simply drag and drop a graphic file onto the application windows (See Screenshot 03.)  Continue reading
