Video Tutorial: Editing Windows Video Files under Mac OS – Part 1

Mac video tutorial

Occasionally, some people ask us how they can edit (under Mac OS) AVI files they got from friends who use Windows OS. Also, we’ve been making game play videos for latest PC games for the past several months. Thanks to Apple’s Boot Camp, we can play PC games natively on our iMac 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo. Suppose that we use screen-capture applications for Windows OS. Then how would we import them to Mac OS so that we could edit them with Final Cut Pro?

By the way, the following is a rough list of screen-capture applications we’ve used in recent months.

  • SnagIt by TechSmith
  • HyperSnap by Hyperionics
  • Super Screen Recorder by Zeallsoft
  • Fraps by beepa
  • ZD Recorder by ZD Soft
  • Camtaisa Studio by TechSmith
  • We won’t discuss which one is the best for what particular purpose unless you are interested in our subjective amateur opinions. Anyway, that’s not the purpose of this post.

The following video tutorial shows steps to use video clips created under Windows OS for the purpose of editing them under Mac OS. A simple scenario is that one recorded a game play video with Fraps. And he wants to edit this game play video with Final Cut Pro. In another scenario, one recorded desktop activity, using Camtasia Studio or ZD Soft. And he wants to edit those screen-capture clips with iMovie. In this video tutorial, we record a short game play video under Windows OS. The ultimate goal is to edit a rendered video clip natively with Final Cut Pro under Mac OS. Of course, you can edit the same rendered video clip with iMovie and Adobe After Effects/Premiere ProContinue reading

Video Tutorial: Hemera Photo Clip Art (Mac) – Having Transparent Background Layer

    Hemera Photo Clip Art 100,000

As the name suggests, this software gives the user access to a lot of clip art photos stored in 7 CDs. We’ve been using it for the past 3 years or so. We love it. But… We had a problem with it till several months ago. How do you have a transparent background layer? We couldn’t figure it out until something that I did without paying attention turned out to be right.

Using Export Assistant, it looks like all you have to do is to choose ‘EXPORT the image to a popular format’ (See Screenshot 01.), choosing a resolution, choosing a background color, choosing a graphic format and then saving the file. As shown in Screenshot 02-3, I always ended up not having an alpha layer. But you CAN have a transparent background even after selecting a background color. So let’s see how to do it.  Continue reading

Tutorial: Remedying Microsoft Office (2008 for Mac) Setup Assistant Infinite Loop Woe

    Microsoft Office

If you are a user of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and have installed Office 2008 SP1, you may have encountered an infinite loop woe causing you to see Microsoft Office Setup Assistant window over and over. A simple solution is to reinstall Office 2008. If you are lucky, you will never see the Setup Assistant window like the one shown in Screenshot 01. If you are not, even after installing updates, you will never get to launch Office applications.

Actually, Microsoft says you can stop this infinite loop woe by removing two files. One is located at

    User > Library > Preferences > Microsoft > Office 2008 >

, you need to trash the file titled Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist (See Screenshot 04.) The other file that you need to trash is located at

    Applications > Microsoft Office 2008 > Office > (See Screenshot 05.)

The file is titled OfficePID.plist. After deleting these two files, double-click on one of the Office applications. After entering the product key (See Screenshot 06.), you will get to use Office applications. If you have trouble locating the files, you may want to watch the following short video tutorial with no audio commentary.  Continue reading
